Details on CAT Score Card 2018

CAT 2018 scorecard is an important document which will be necessary during interview

and admission process.

Institutes other than IIMs which accept CAT score also require students to submit their official

CAT Score Card during application and admission process.

Once you have CAT Scorecard in hand, make sure it has the following information:

Personal Details

These include Name, Gender, Date of Birth, as filled during CAT Registration.

Candidate’s Contact Details

This includes the candidate’s postal address and email id.

Category Details

Category details include information if the candidate is from General, NC-OBC, or SC/ST category. The CAT Exam scorecard also shows a candidate’s PWD/DA status.

Test Details

Test details like CAT 2018 Registration number/Login id, test date and slot.

Scaled Score

Scaling of CAT scores is a process carried out to ensure fairness to all the candidates.

CAT exam is conducted in two slots and the test paper is different for each shift so does the level of difficulty.

There might be a case where question paper in one shift may be tough in comparison to the other shift.

In such cases, the scores may vary.

Thus in order to ensure fairness in comparing scores of candidates across different test sessions the scores of

all appearing candidates are scaled.Your CAT 2018 score card will contain section wise scaled score

and overall scaled score.

Percentile Score

A percentile score is the rank of a candidate relative to the rank of other candidates appearing in CAT 2018.

For example

if in an exam where 100 candidates appeared and your rank is 25, then 75 people scored less than you.

So your percentile score would be

(75/100) X 100 = 75%ile

For any questions regarding CAT Result,
you may contact the authorities at1800-2663-549/ cathelpdesk@iimcat.ac.in.

How is CAT Result Calculated?

  • As per the exam pattern of CAT Exam, each question holds 3 marks.
  • For marking a wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted as penalty.
  • But no mark is deducted on marking the wrong option under non-MCQs section.

CAT 2018 Percentile

CAT Results is declared in the form of percentile score. The higher the percentile score, greater are

the chances to get shortlisted for the admission procedure.

These percentile scores are determined normalization of scores.

CAT Score Validity

The scores of CAT Results are valid for one year only.

The score validity of CAT Result 2018 will be until December 31, 2018.

The last date to download the scorecard,

as well as all queries regarding CAT Result 2018 will be entertained until this date only.

CAT 2018 Score vs Percentile

CAT percentile vs score signifies percentile corresponding to the score.

The table below shows CAT Percentile Vs CAT Score of the academic year 2016.

CAT PercentileCAT Score

99.02 to 99.95

155.85 to 200.49

98.03 to 98.98

142.83 to 155.24

97.05 to 97.84

134.6 to 141.07

96.02 to 96.99

128.23 to 134.27

95.08 to 95.97

123.36 to 127.97

CAT Score Normalisation

“The Normalization process shall adjust for location and scale differences of score distributions across

different forms. After normalization across different forms,

the scores shall be further normalized across different sections.”

  • CAT 2018 was conducted in two different shifts and each shift had a different set of question paper.
  • The difficulty level for each question set varies.
  • Hence, in order to ensure fairness and equity in the marking process,
  • CAT Exam authorities follow a normalization process where marks of each candidate are scaled.

Example- To explain further, let’s suppose 1000 students appeared in both the shifts in two cities A and B.

The question paper in the second shift was tougher on the second shift.

Also, the students from City B are from Hindi medium background but the question paper was in English.

Now, the average score of students in the first shift is 110 and an average score of students in

second shift is 100. Also, an average score of students in city A is 120 and city B is 100.

Now, comparing the scores of all the students on the same parameter would not be fair.

So the scores of the students in the second set and city would be

multiplied by a number which is arrived at by careful consideration of multiple factors such as:

  1. Highest score
  2. Lowest score
  3. Top 10 percentile scores
  4. Lowest 10 percentile scores
  5. Mean
  6. Median
  7. Other deviations (city, educational background etc.)
  • When CAT result is prepared, every candidate’soriginal score undergoes the process of normalization.
  • Though CAT authorities have not disclosed their method of normalization,
  • the official brochure states that at first the process is
  • adjusted for location and then scale the differences of score distribution across different forms.
  • After this process, the scores obtained are again scaled for different sections.
  • The score thus obtained is then converted to percentiles.
